Because the business is built completely around sales, it can prove difficult for a telemarketing company to build and keep a competent workforce. A successful telemarketing company is one that is able to train and retain a competent sales force.
Domestic telemarketing
Most telemarketing companies operating in the United States hire American workers. While many companies have managed to get by with outsourcing other phone services overseas, the dependency on clear and direct communication makes it preferable to hire American workers for this sort of work. Telemarketing companies appeal to potential employees due to high wages or commissions. However, the high-stress sales experience leads to a lot of turnover.
Overseas telemarketing
Although it is less common than with customer service, some companies outsource their telemarketing to countries such as India and the Philippines. While most outsourced telephone work is for customer service, in some cases, companies higher foreigners to sell products and services over the telephone. The standard for English skills is typically much higher than those expected of customer service agents, so it is often difficult to find qualified employees. If they are successful, however, they can pay considerably less to the outsourced telemarketers. Many companies split the difference by having both domestic and foreign call centers.
Telemarketing companies face great challenges, especially in this turbulent economic climate. However, as long as there are things to sell and people to buy them, a need for salespeople to coordinate the transactions is sure to endure.
